چکیده

In recent years, the topic of plant intelligence has triggered ample discussion among plant scientists, especially when cast under the label of plant neurobiology therein). According to plant neurobiology, it is both claimed (and challenged in turn) that plants exhibit intelligent behavior, and that they possess internal control structures in many ways functionally similar to neuron-based control structures. So far, this debate has gone largely unnoticed within the field of (animal) adaptive behavior and embodied cognition. However, we hope it becomes clear in the foregoing why this work is highly relevant for research on adaptive behavior and embodied cognition more generally. For one thing, it furnishes researches with a whole new set of relevant phenomena that deserves attention. In addition, by departing from textbook examples of intelligence and adaptive behavior, its theoretical importance in

Plants: Adaptive behavior, root-brains, and minimal cognition

Plant intelligence has gone largely unnoticed within the field of animal and human adaptive behavior. In this context, we will introduce current work on plant intelligence as a new set of relevant phenomena that deserves attention and also discuss its potential relevance for the study of adaptive behavior more generally. More specifically, we first give a short overview of adaptive behavior in ...

Plant neurobiology: From stimulus perception to adaptive behavior of plants, via integrated chemical and electrical signaling.

This sentence from the stimulating and visionary review article by Jack C. Schultz entitled Shared Signals and the Potential for Phylogenetic Espionage Between Plants and Animals1 is still very relevant. Although the sensory basis of plants, integrated signaling in plants, and the resulting adaptive behavior in plants, is accepted as legitimate areas for study in the plant sciences, these facts...

Assessment of Cognitive Emotion Regulation Scale Scores among Control Room Operators

Introduction: Cognitive emotion regulation (CER) strategies define as cognition-based responses according to emotion-eliciting experiences that can change the type and severity of individuals’ reactions and behaviors. This modification may positively or negatively affect cognitive performance and therefore, it is a defining issue in the workplace. Notably, industries such as combined cycle powe...

Anticipations, Brains, Individual and Social Behavior: An Introduction to Anticipatory Systems

Research on anticipatory behavior in adaptive learning systems continues to gain more recognition and appreciation in various research disciplines. This book provides an overarching view on anticipatory mechanisms in cognition, learning, and behavior. It connects the knowledge from cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and linguistics with that of artificial intelligence, machine learning, cognit...

The Role of Constraints and Dynamic Mechanisms in Behavior Generation

Biological brains are capable of adaptive behavior to sustain performance on tasks in the face of increasingly difficult constraints. Precisely how this performance is achieved, especially under demanding real-time constraint, is an important problem in the study of cognition. Brains are embedded in and constrained by their environments. The brain/environment pair together form a coupled dynami...
